This group only meets as and when a Charity Challenge game of golf is arranged. These will be periodically - and as matches are being organised the group will be opened up for new members if the group can accept more entrants. In the mean time the group pages will be used to inform existing members of details of matches and results (see button above for results).
There will be at least 24 places available on a first come first served basis

The Charity Challenge Competition took place on Wednesday 28th May 2025. The day turned out to be a bit like last year, with intermittent showers. However, the rain was light and the sun bright when it shone. We had 16 entrants in total and for the most part we all had a great day. We retired to our office (The Woodman) after the competition where presentations could be made. Our charity this year was Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. This is a very worthwhile charity which trains dogs to assist those of us who unfortunate to be deaf. Mostly in the house alerting the deaf person to things like the phone ringing, the microwave going off or someone at the door. In total, including the entry fees and the raffle, we raised £340. This was our sixth year, and we have now raised £1640 for various charities.
We had three separate challenges today. The first was to see who could get the nearest to the pin in 2 shots on hole 10. This was won by Jim Summerly. Second was who could get nearest the pin in one shot on hole 14. This was won by Phil Crisp. Finally we looked for the group of players that could get the lowest combined number of shots on hole 18. This was won by the group with Bryan Goodayle, Phil Crisp and Mike Farmiloe.
Last but most importantly is the result for the Charity Competition itself. I was a very close-run thing this year but our outright winner was Mike Farmiloe – WELL DONE Mike with a Stapleford score of 36. Peter Homden was second with 35 and Roland Dean was third with 33. Full results are below.
That concludes the report for this year and just leaves me to say thank you to everyone who took part and made it a successful day. If you want to take part next year, then just enrol in the group and you will be included.

The 2024 Charity Challenge Competition took place on May 22nd. The day was, to say the least, wet! It did not stop raining all through the game. However, fun was had by everyone who took place. Steve Byrne had a good idea. Rather than use a standard umbrella he had the great idea of having one fixed to his head. Well, it might work for some people but I am not sure the look was right for Steve.
We originally had 21 entrants but unfortunately due to the rain this finished with 15 finishing the competition. Peter Robertson was the eventual winner with 35 points, which was a good result considering the weather.
We have now held this competition for 5 years. This year our charity was the British Heart Foundation and a representative for this group attended the prize giving.
Over the 5 years we have now raised over £1300 for various charities, and we intend to carry on with this for as long as we can. As Group Leader, I would like to personally thank all of our members who take part each year and a special shout to Trevor Cornwell for providing his wonderful homemade biscuits this year.
Members can see the full results by clicking on the button above called “Comp Details”. Any PU3A members who would like to take part in next years competition, do not hesitate to contact me.
Finally click on the button above "Gallery" to see a couple of photos from the day. Scroll down and place your curser over the picture for a description.
